Developer toolsHow to use Markdown Editor & Live Preview
- Type Markdown or load a local .md file. Insertion helpers add a heading, bold text, link or inline code around a selection.
- Choose newline handling and a preview theme. Review the rendered content and word/character information.
- Set a document title before downloading standalone HTML, or keep the original Markdown as the editable source.
When to use this tool
Draft documentation with a live preview or convert a local Markdown file for sharing. Check links and referenced media in the final destination before publishing.
Markdown source and sanitized HTML serve different purposes
Markdown is a source notation; its rendered HTML is a browser document. The preview parses common GitHub-flavored structures and sanitizes the resulting HTML before insertion. Page-affecting styles and embedded forms/objects are forbidden. The HTML export includes a controlled readable stylesheet and an escaped document title, while the Markdown download retains the source text.
Worked example
# Release notes
- Added a useful setting
- Fixed an export issue
**Review** the generated HTML before publishing. Keep source and rendered release notes together
Original Markdown practice input
# Review notes - Check the record identifiers. - Confirm the output format. **Next:** review the saved file.
- Paste this authored note or load your own Markdown. Inspect headings, lists and emphasis in the preview rather than assuming every renderer uses identical rules.
- Choose the standalone document title. Use the preview theme for your reading preference; it does not rewrite the Markdown or make the HTML download adopt that preview theme.
- Download Markdown to keep the editable source. Download HTML for a standalone rendered document, or Copy HTML when the next workflow expects generated markup.
- Open the saved HTML in its intended context and inspect it. Sanitization can remove raw HTML features and styling; it is not a way to preserve arbitrary embedded applications or styles.
- Save both files before leaving. There is no autosave here, and remote image references in source documents may contact external hosts.
Original practice wording, not a generated HTML artifact or a publication claim. For a separate block-writing workspace, use Document Studio. For a source-text revision comparison, use Text Diff.
Limits and output checks
Raw HTML support is constrained by sanitization. This is not a pixel-identical GitHub renderer or a general website sanitizer. Remote images/links in your Markdown can reference external hosts; review their destinations before loading private documents. No autosave or cloud storage is added.
Reference: Marked parser and sanitization notes.
Frequently asked questions
Does the dark theme change my Markdown?
No. It affects the preview container, while the source remains unchanged. Export uses the controlled standalone stylesheet.
Can I preserve arbitrary embedded styles?
No. Inline styles and style elements are intentionally removed so a document cannot restyle the surrounding tool page.
Is the HTML download an editable Markdown source?
No. It is rendered HTML. Keep the separate .md download if you want to revise the Markdown later.
Keep editable Markdown alongside rendered output
Write or load Markdown and inspect its preview. Save the source .md when you need future edits; use HTML export when the next step expects rendered markup.
Scope of this workflow
Sanitization constrains raw HTML and styles. Remote references may contact external hosts, and the page provides no autosave or cloud storage.
