Ready to use

Do not paste real API keys, passwords, or credentials into any untrusted website. Masking only affects the output; it does not change the input.

How to use Env File Editor & Validator

  1. Paste NAME=value lines. Blank lines and full-line comments are skipped; an export prefix is accepted.
  2. Choose sorting, masking and duplicate removal. When duplicates are removed, the last assignment is kept.
  3. Validate and review the normalized output. Download an example env file or raw-string JSON, then clear sensitive fields when finished.

When to use this tool

Review environment variable names or prepare a masked .env example for a repository. Keep real credentials out of shared examples and check the destination parser before reusing exported values.

Example values are not evaluated

The editor checks assignment syntax and variable names. It does not expand shell variables, execute commands, infer types or resolve references to other variables. The JSON export represents the normalized assignment values as strings, retaining literal quote characters. Masking is enabled by default so a sample can show the expected variable names without real values.

Worked example

Input:
export API_URL=https://example.test
API_KEY=private-value
Masked output:
API_KEY=YOUR_API_KEY_HERE
API_URL=YOUR_API_URL_HERE

Limits and output checks

This is a line-based editor, not a complete parser for every dotenv or shell dialect. Multiline quoted values and inline comment semantics are not interpreted. JSON export requires unique variable names. Never treat masked output as proof that an original secret was not copied elsewhere.

Frequently asked questions

Are quotes removed in JSON export?

No. Values are raw assignment strings, not evaluated environment values. Literal enclosing quotes are retained inside the JSON string.

Which duplicate assignment is kept?

With duplicate removal enabled, the last assignment wins. Without it, duplicates remain in env output and JSON export rejects the ambiguous mapping.

Does Clear delete browser history or clipboard data?

It clears this tool's input and output fields. It cannot erase data already copied to the clipboard, saved or recorded outside the page.

Review a configuration as literal assignments

Edit the supported line-based assignments and inspect exports before using them in a specific runtime. Keep secrets out of sample data where possible.

Scope of this workflow

This is not a shell evaluator or a complete parser for every dotenv dialect. Masking a value does not erase copies elsewhere, and duplicate keys affect JSON export.
