DEVELOPER TOOLKIT GENERATORS

Random MAC Address Generator

Create sample MAC address strings for fixtures, documentation or a lab configuration. Choose notation and administration bits explicitly, then export a bounded batch without changing any network adapter.

Random addresses are for testing or local virtual networks. A prefix does not establish ownership of a vendor OUI.

How to use Random MAC Address Generator

  1. Set a whole-number count from 1 to 500 and choose separator notation and local/global administration bits.
  2. Optionally enter a three-byte hexadecimal prefix. Select uppercase/lowercase and plain text or JSON output.
  3. Generate and inspect the batch, then copy or download. The generator avoids duplicates within that batch only.

When to use this tool

Create syntactically useful test values for fixtures or documentation. Generated addresses do not reconfigure a network adapter and are not a claim of manufacturer assignment.

Administration bits can alter the first prefix byte

Every generated address is unicast, so the multicast bit is cleared. Local mode sets the locally administered bit; global-bit mode clears it. These bit settings take precedence over a supplied prefix's first byte. The remaining random bytes come from Web Crypto. Selecting the global bit does not register a vendor allocation or establish that an address is globally assigned.

Worked example

Requested prefix: 00:1A:2B
Locally administered mode can produce: 02:1A:2B:xx:xx:xx
The first byte changes to satisfy the chosen administration bits.

Limits and output checks

These are generated strings, not assigned hardware identities. No adapter configuration, vendor lookup or network uniqueness check is performed. Within-batch duplicate avoidance does not guarantee uniqueness across runs or devices. Prefix syntax must contain exactly three bytes using permitted separators.

Frequently asked questions

Will this change my computer's MAC address?

No. It only generates text and downloadable files. Device configuration is outside this tool.

Why did the first prefix byte change?

The unicast and administration bits are enforced after the prefix is applied. The page documents that precedence explicitly.

Does the global option allocate a real vendor address?

No. It changes a bit, not registration or ownership. Use values appropriate for your environment and allocation policies.

Generate sample identifiers without changing hardware

Choose the format and supported prefix settings, then generate strings for a fixture or documentation example. Keep the distinction between sample data and assigned device identities.

Scope of this workflow

This performs no adapter configuration, vendor lookup or network uniqueness check. Avoiding duplicates within a batch is not a global uniqueness guarantee.
