Inspect photo metadata

Read locally · Original unchanged

JPEG, PNG, WebP, TIFF, HEIC or AVIF · One image at a time · Up to 50 MiB

The file is read on your device. No upload, image conversion or metadata changes.

How to view EXIF data

  1. Choose a local photo or drag it into the workspace.
  2. Review the camera, lens, exposure, dates and GPS coordinates when these tags are present. Search by tag name, group or value.
  3. Copy or download the decoded report as JSON. Clear the workspace before opening another file if you want to remove the current results.

What this viewer reads

EXIF stores capture information such as camera make and model, exposure time, aperture, ISO, lens and orientation. This tool decodes standard TIFF/EXIF directories and basic JPEG/PNG headers, including EXIF embedded in WebP, HEIC and AVIF where supported by the parser. Not every image contains EXIF. XMP, IPTC, ICC profiles and proprietary camera MakerNotes are outside this viewer's scope.

Dates and location

Camera date strings are displayed as stored. A capture date often has no timezone; the viewer does not convert it to your local time or assume UTC. Valid latitude and longitude pairs are converted to decimal degrees locally. No map is loaded. Metadata can be edited elsewhere and is not proof of when or where a photo was taken.

Limits

Select one image up to 50 MiB. Unusual or damaged metadata may not be decoded. Reading runs in a background worker with a time limit. Missing EXIF does not prove that a file contains no other metadata. This viewer does not remove metadata, alter pixels or rewrite the original image.

Parser: exifr, bundled locally under the MIT license.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my photo have no EXIF?

Screenshots and generated images may never have had EXIF. Social networks, messaging apps and image editors often remove some or all metadata when saving a copy.

Does this send my location to a map provider?

No. Coordinates are calculated and displayed on your device. There are no embedded maps, remote image URLs or file uploads.

Can I remove or edit EXIF here?

This is a read-only viewer. Use Metadata Inspector & Remover to create a cleaned JPEG, PNG or WebP copy.

Is the JSON the raw EXIF block?

No. It contains decoded tags grouped by directory, file details and computed coordinates when available. Binary arrays may be summarized. It is not a byte-for-byte metadata backup.

Inspect decoded tags without rewriting a photo

Open a supported photo, search the tag groups and inspect any derived coordinates. Download JSON only when you intend to retain those details.

Scope of this workflow

This is a read-only viewer. Missing EXIF does not prove an absence of other metadata, and decoded JSON is not a raw byte backup of the metadata block.
