Review, remove, verify

Local processing · No recompression

Removal: JPEG, PNG, WebP · Inspection also: TIFF, HEIC, AVIF · Up to 50 MiB

One image at a time. Files stay on your device. This tool creates a separate download and leaves the original unchanged.

Preserve appearance

ICC profiles can contain profile descriptions. Turn this off to remove them; colours may change. Other rendering headers are always retained.

Replaces EXIF with an orientation-only tag for rotated or mirrored images. Turn this off to remove EXIF completely; display orientation may change.

How to inspect and remove image metadata

  1. Select a local image. Review its metadata block inventory and the decoded EXIF fields.
  2. Choose whether to retain its colour profile and a minimal orientation tag. The removal plan updates to reflect these settings.
  3. Remove metadata. The result is re-inspected before a download is offered. Save the cleaned copy and review it before sharing.

What is removed?

For JPEG, this removes EXIF, XMP, IPTC/Photoshop, comments, other application blocks, JFIF thumbnail pixels and data after the end marker. The necessary JFIF and Adobe colour-transform headers remain. For PNG, this removes EXIF, text, timestamps and unrecognized ancillary chunks while keeping image, animation and rendering chunks. For WebP, it removes EXIF, XMP, unknown chunks and trailing data, including unknown chunks inside animation frames. ICC profiles are removed when colour-profile preservation is off.

Image quality and appearance

Compressed image data is copied, without canvas conversion or recompression. Animation is retained. Auxiliary JPEG images and gain maps may be removed with application metadata. Keeping orientation writes only the required orientation tag, without GPS, camera details or EXIF thumbnails. Removing orientation may change how a photo is displayed; removing its ICC profile may change its colours. Rendering information such as dimensions, gamma and density remains.

Scope and limits

Removal supports JPEG, PNG and WebP images up to 50 MiB. TIFF, HEIC and AVIF are available for EXIF inspection only. PDFs, office documents, audio and video are outside this tool's scope. This is not complete anonymization: visible faces, text, watermarks, compressed image content and required rendering structures can still identify an image. Metadata values can be edited elsewhere and do not prove when or where a photo was taken.

Malformed containers are rejected. If EXIF values cannot be decoded, the block inventory can still be useful. Camera timestamps are shown as stored without assuming a timezone. The inspection JSON can contain the original GPS and camera details, so share it deliberately.

Frequently asked questions

Does this upload my images?

No. Inspection, removal and verification run locally in a JavaScript worker. The parser is bundled with the site.

Why can an EXIF block remain after removal?

Keep orientation is enabled by default. If an image needs rotation or mirroring, a minimal orientation-only EXIF block is written. Turn that setting off to remove EXIF completely.

Does this change image quality or delete the original?

No recompression is performed. A new file is downloaded. The original stays on your device. Colour or orientation can look different if you remove those display instructions.

Can this remove metadata from every file type?

Removal is limited to JPEG, PNG and WebP. Other listed photo formats are inspection-only. Use the PDF Metadata Editor for supported PDF document properties.

Review retained display instructions after cleanup

Inspect the image container and choose supported removal settings. Compare the cleaned copy’s orientation and color with the original before sharing.

Scope of this workflow

Removal applies to JPEG, PNG and WebP rather than every listed inspection format. Keeping orientation can retain a minimal EXIF block; the report may still contain original details.
