PDF Studio: Organize and Annotate PDFs

Organize PDF pages, add text and drawn annotations, merge images and documents, extract text or run OCR, and export PDFs in one browser workspace. Annotations add visible overlays; they do not replace the original PDF text or provide secure redaction.

Organize pages and add PDF annotations

Use PDF Studio to assemble a document, rotate or reorder pages, and add visible notes, highlights or drawing. The original PDF page content is retained. Added marks are flattened into an annotation image layer in the exported PDF; they do not replace or edit the original text.

Review, annotate and save a document

  1. Choose Add files and select PDFs or PNG, JPEG or WebP images. Check that the imported pages preview correctly.
  2. Use Organize pages to reorder, rotate, duplicate or remove pages. Select the pages you intend to work with.
  3. Open Annotate & edit, choose a page, and add text, highlights, shapes or drawing. Review placement and opacity in the preview.
  4. Use Convert & extract when you need source text, a page PNG or selected pages. A scan without a text layer needs optional OCR for text recognition.
  5. Choose Export PDF and inspect the result. Exporting selected pages requires a selection; original page features and the new annotation layer should be checked before sharing.
  6. Open Projects to save locally or choose Export backup for a portable workspace ZIP containing source PDFs and editable marks. Keep your original files as well.

Worked example: keep the source, share the annotated result

This original four-page fixture starts with text, a blue rectangle, crop boxes and different intrinsic rotations. In the earlier local PDF Studio workflow, each page received a text annotation, a yellow highlight and a red line. The stored example uses text size setting 20 and annotation opacity 0.45; these are recorded example settings, not a guarantee of identical rendering on every device.

  1. Compare the source and annotated PDFs. The note, highlight and line are added marks; the underlying source text remains.
  2. For a similar review, add your PDF, use Organize pages for page order/orientation, then use Annotate & edit for notes.
  3. Export PDF when the recipient needs the marked document. Use a page PNG only when a flattened picture is suitable.
  4. Keep the ZIP as an editable workspace backup, not as the recipient's ordinary review copy.

Annotated PDFShare a marked document.Original text remains beneath the annotation image layer. Covering is not secure redaction.
Page PNGShare a visual page preview. It is a picture, not editable document text.
Workspace ZIPReopen the supported workspace and marks. It contains complete source files, including material not included in selected-page exports.

The ZIP is the genuine earlier backup, not a reconstructed project. Back up your current workspace before importing an example that replaces it. Historical source integrity and export records exist for this synthetic case; no fresh browser run, advanced-document preservation, OCR output or production availability is certified here. Current runtime remains UNVERIFIED.

Annotation, extraction and redaction limits

Covering text is not secure redaction. The original text or image can remain in the PDF beneath an annotation. A visual rectangle, highlight or new text box is not a verified removal of sensitive content. Use a separately verified redaction workflow when information must be removed.

Text extraction reads the source PDF's text layer. It does not turn a drawn annotation into native editable PDF text. PDF export adds the visible annotation image layer; interactive forms, existing signatures, links and other advanced document features need their own output checks.

Files, workspace bounds and resource use

  • Sources: at most 100 source files, up to 180 MiB per source and 256 MiB of source data in the workspace. Image-to-PDF conversion must also fit the workspace's byte limit.
  • Pages: at most 2,000 workspace pages. Rendering and export can reach practical memory limits well before that count.
  • Imported images: PNG, JPEG and WebP, at most 25 megapixels and 16,384 pixels on either edge after decoding. They become PDF pages.
  • Preview/output: page preview and annotation canvases have separate allocation guards. Very large or unusually shaped pages can fail even when the source file fits the file-size cap. Try fewer pages or smaller source images.
  • Workspace backup: the manifest is limited to 16 MiB. ZIP imports are bounded and source files are verified before installation; a backup with missing or damaged sources needs recovery.

Processing, dependencies and local projects

Document rendering and page/annotation processing run in this browser. The PDF viewer, its worker and the PDF writing library load from third-party CDNs. ZIP backup code loads when needed. These requests contact the library hosts; this is not a guarantee that the application is available fully offline.

Optional OCR loads Tesseract code, worker/runtime data and language models. English and Hindi options are present in the interface. Recognized text appears in the OCR panel and can be downloaded as TXT; the current PDF export does not add an OCR text layer. Check recognized words, numbers and reading order before using them.

Local projects depend on browser storage, which can be cleared, evicted or denied. A portable ZIP includes complete source PDFs and the editable workspace, potentially including content omitted from a selected-page export. Keep such backups separate from documents intended for sharing.

Why will a PDF or image not open?

Check that the file is supported, readable and within the source and decoded-image bounds. Encrypted, malformed or unusually complex documents may fail. When the engine cannot load, check the library-download message; importing a different file does not fix a missing dependency.

Why is text still extractable after I covered it?

Annotations change the visible result without deleting the original text layer. This is expected for this annotation workflow and is why covering text must not be treated as secure redaction.

Why did saved work disappear or a backup fail?

Browser storage is separate from a downloaded backup and can be unavailable or cleared. Retain originals and export a workspace ZIP. If source recovery is requested, relink the exact original PDFs and inspect the workspace before saving or exporting again.

Projects are saved only to this browser and origin. Clearing site data can erase them. Export a backup to keep a portable copy. The last three distinct saved states are available under Recovery snapshots; recovering one creates a separate workspace.

Recover workspace sources

New backups verify the exact source using its SHA-256 checksum. Image sources were converted to PDFs when imported; relink the converted PDF from a backup. Local snapshots remain tied to this browser; keep a portable ZIP backup.
