Add page numbers without uploading your PDF
Choose a PDF, select the pages to number, set the first number and a label such as “Page {n} of {total}”, and download the result. Labels are added as selectable PDF text. A selected subset is numbered consecutively in document order; unselected pages stay in the output.
Formats and limits
Use unencrypted PDFs up to 50 MB. Roman numbers support 1–3999. Page ranges must be within the document and use ascending bounds. The preview approximates font rendering; inspect the downloaded PDF, especially rotated pages. Built-in Helvetica supports a limited character set; unsupported label characters produce an error. Editing a signed PDF changes its contents and can invalidate an existing digital signature.
Frequently asked questions
Can I skip the cover page?
Yes. Enter a range starting at page 2 and choose the first printed number, such as 1.
Does this change PDF page labels?
No. It adds visible text to page content; it does not change the page labels displayed by a PDF reader.
Are my documents uploaded?
The selected PDF is processed in this browser. PDF libraries and preview workers load from a third-party CDN, which receives ordinary network request information.

When to use Add Page Numbers to PDF
Number a report after its cover or continue labels for a document section. Review the intended start value before creating the copy.
How to use this tool
- Choose a supported unencrypted PDF and the pages to label.
- Set the first number, label style or template and position.
- Preview, generate and inspect labels across the selected pages.
Number the report after its cover
The selected pages receive consecutive numbers in document order. Unselected pages stay in the file, and {total} counts the selected pages rather than every page in the document.
| Source page | Expected added label |
|---|---|
| 1, cover | No new label |
| 2, first report page | Page 1 of 5 |
| 6, last report page | Page 5 of 5 |
- Open your PDF and enter
2-6only when it matches this six-page example. Use the actual source positions, not existing printed labels. - Set the starting value and template. For nonadjacent pages, numbering still advances across the selected set in document order.
- Preview an unselected page, the first selected page and the last. Check position, font size and margins so the new label does not cover existing content.
- Download and inspect the result in a PDF reader, particularly any rotated pages. The complete six-page file remains; adding labels does not remove the cover or replace old printed numbers.
Expected labels are a planning example, not a generated PDF. If the report still needs rearranging, use Reorder Pages first. Assemble separate documents with Merge PDF before applying continuous labels.
Output and limits
Labels are visible page text rather than PDF viewer page-label metadata. Roman numeral support is bounded, and special glyphs or rotated pages need review.
Frequently asked questions
