How to edit a DOCX document online

Use this Word document editor for supported text, character formatting, lists, tables and inline PNG/JPEG images. It exports a new DOCX from the supported document model; it does not reproduce every Microsoft Word feature or page layout.

  1. Open a document. Select a .docx file up to 10 MiB, try the sample or start a new document. Keep your original file.
  2. Find the content. Navigate the headings or blocks, use text search, or choose a table cell paragraph. The preview is a reading and editing view rather than exact Word pagination.
  3. Edit and format. Change paragraph text, select a range for character formatting, and apply paragraph alignment, spacing or basic lists.
  4. Update tables and images. Edit supported table cells and add inline PNG/JPEG images. Set image dimensions and alternative text where needed.
  5. Download the result. Save a new DOCX with supported features or download plain text. Inspect the document in the application where it will be used, especially before sharing.

Example: revise a short report

Open a simple DOCX report, locate a heading, revise its paragraph and update a table entry. Use search and replacement previews for repeated text. Download a new document, then review its layout alongside the original.

Practice a targeted revision before editing a Word file

Use the built-in sample to distinguish a paragraph edit from a document-wide replacement. This exercise starts from authored sample text; no uploaded report or finished DOCX output is implied.

  1. Choose Try sample. Find the heading Next steps in the outline or block selector.
  2. Change its text to Review checklist and choose Apply paragraph. Review the heading in the reading view.
  3. Search for document with the scope set to Selected paragraph. The renamed heading contains no such word. Switch to Whole document, including table cells to find it in the final sample paragraph.
  4. Preview replacing simplified document with review copy. Inspect the scope and before/after text, then apply only if the intended paragraph is included. One Undo restores the replacement operation.
  5. Download a new DOCX and inspect it in the receiving application. The expected final wording for this exercise is Read the text, make a revision, and download a review copy.

Search uses literal text and does not cross paragraph boundaries. Whole-document scope also includes supported table-cell paragraphs, so a replacement intended for body text can affect a table. Preview shows a limited list of changed paragraphs; inspect the total change count as well.

Start with a copy of a real document after this practice. A successful text change does not establish that headers, tracked revisions or the original Word pagination will survive export; those compatibility limits still apply.

Formatting and Word compatibility

Supported formatting includes bold, italic, underline, strike, font, size, color, paragraph alignment and spacing. Basic lists, supported table structures and inline PNG/JPEG images are included. Exact pagination, headers and footers, comments, revisions, notes, floating image wrapping, nested tables and vertical cell merges are not preserved. DOC, DOCM and encrypted files are not supported.

Local editing and recovery

Document processing runs in the browser. Optional local autosave is off by default and stores one draft in the current browser profile. It is not cloud sync: another tab can replace the same draft, and browser cleanup can remove it. Download important changes rather than relying on recovery storage.

Choose the right document tool

Use the DOCX Viewer when you only need to read supported content. Use Document Studio for its separate document-creation workflow, or open the XLSX Editor for spreadsheet data and the PPTX Editor for slides. Browse all Office tools.

DOCX questions

Can I edit a Word document online?

Yes. The editor reads supported document text, formatting, lists, tables and images locally. It provides a paginated text view rather than a replica of Word pages.

What happens to formatting, images, and tables?

Supported character formatting, lists, tables, PNG/JPEG images, and basic page settings are retained. Exact page layout, text boxes, headers, footers, notes, comments, and unsupported constructs are not preserved. Keep your original file.

Can I edit and download a Word document?

Yes. Edit text and character formatting, manage lists, tables and embedded PNG/JPEG images, and undo/redo. Download a new DOCX containing supported features, or plain text.

Are documents uploaded or saved automatically?

No. The tool processes document contents locally and bundles its ZIP library with the site. The editor offers opt-in browser-local recovery with restore/delete controls. It is off by default. Download your changes before closing.

Which limits apply?

Up to 10 MiB compressed, 64 MiB total declared expanded package content, 8 MiB per selected XML part, 2,048 package parts, 10,000 blocks/paragraphs, 1,000,000 text characters, and 100,000 characters per paragraph. DOC, DOCM, encrypted documents, ZIP64 packages, nested or vertically merged tables, and tracked changes are not supported.
